Broward College Village Square Dinner at the Square: A Free Market for Education?

Broward College Village Square will host the final Dinner at the Square event in its series of non-partisan debates featuring guest speakers discussing their views on various issues facing the community. The May dinner will focus on the topic, “A Free Market for Education?”

The Village Square Dinner at the Square events are public forums meant to better educate the public on important, and sometimes controversial, issues. Guests are provided dinner as they listen to the panel of community representatives and topic experts present varying viewpoints.

Charter schools vs. public schools vs. private schools. It’s a constant discussion of who does it better and more cost effectively. With vouchers expanding, charter schools on the rise and free education online (Khan Academy), does our education need to revamp itself?

This month’s Village Square is taking a dive into the economics of education. What is the impact of privatization on the public education system and what effects does it have on the different population it serves.

Moderator:
Robert Runcie, Superintendent, School Board of Broward County

Panelists:
Joy Frank, General Counsel and Legislative Liaison, Florida Association of District School Superintendents
Bill Mattox, Director of the J. Stanley Marshall Center for Educational Options, The James Madison Institute
Kerry-Ann Royes, CEO of YWCA, Education Blogger & Parent
