Join us for an insightful lecture by Barbara Buhler Lynes, Ph.D., Sunny Kaufman Senior Curator, on the NSU Art Museum Cobra collection.

NSU Art Museum houses the largest collection of Cobra art in America. These dynamic, colorful, and expressive works were made by international artists who joined together in 1948, naming their group Cobra after their home cities of Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The characteristics of their art parallel those of artists in America known as Abstract Expressionists, yet interestingly, neither group was aware of the other. This lecture explores the dynamics of these major art movements in the work of Alechinsky, Corneille, Phillip Guston, Asger Jorn, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock, among others, and demonstrates how the art of each group became pivotal to specific developments in American and European contemporary art.
