The South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA) has announced that the inaugural sessions of Senior Planet classes will begin June 25.

Created by Older Adults Technology Services of New York, Senior Planet is an award-winning national program that trains seniors to use technology to improve and enhance their social and civic engagement.

SoFIA is the exclusive South Florida provider of program which is being presented as an “act” project by the local nonprofit “Think & Act Tank,” which is focused on economic and social research, policy and programs that support South Florida’s aging community.

“Computer Basics for Older Adults” is offered for those 55 and older and will range from basic email and web browsing to gaining financial literacy and improving workforce skills. The first 10-week sessions begin on Monday, June 25 at Citrix located at 851 West Cypress Creek Road in Fort Lauderdale. Enrollees must commit to attending two classes each week for 10 weeks with an option of an 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. morning session or a 1 – 2:30 p.m. afternoon session.

There is no fee to attend the sessions which are sponsored by The Jim Moran Foundation, Consumer Technology Association Foundation, Citrix and Erwin M. Vasquez, M.D. and Elaine Vasquez Family Foundation Fund in honor of Doctors Natalie A. and Oscar Nadeau of the Community Foundation of Broward with additional support from Comcast and Wells Fargo.

Future sessions will include classes dedicated to veterans receiving services at the William “Bill” Kling VA Outpatient Clinic in Sunrise to be held at the City of Tamarac Community Center in late summer followed by fall classes for the community at the Center for Active Aging in Deerfield Beach and sessions in South and Central Broward later this year.
