Roberto Matta (1911 – 2002) is considered the last great Surrealist painter and on February 15th, 2018, New River Fine Art will unveil an important exhibition and sale of the artist’s work.

Matta: On the Edge of a Dream is a monumental exhibition featuring original paintings and sculpture featured in the book of the same name, as well as a selection of the artist’s graphics,” stated Lisa Burgess, owner of New River Fine Art.  “To have this many museum quality works in a single exhibition represents an extraordinary collecting opportunity.  Many of the paintings have extensive museum exhibition histories”.

Born in Chile, Matta started his artistic career in Paris as a student of Le Corbusier.  He joined the Surrealist circle and exhibited with Salvador Dali, Andre Breton, Max Ernst and others before fleeing Europe at the outbreak of WWII.  While in New York the artist’s ideas of space, time, energy, the cosmos and how Matta brought them together on canvas gave birth to the New York School of Painting, the Abstract Expressionist Movement and influenced artists such as Robert Motherwell and Arshille Gorky.

Roberto Matta served as the bridge between Europe and America – between the 20th Century Masters and the Abstract Expressionist Movement.  His major museum exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art, NY in 1957, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1964, the Nationalgalerie, Berlin in 1970 and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris in 1985, His work is held in many important museum, public and private collections including the Tate Modern, London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, The Museum of Modern Art, NY, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

The exhibition is on display through March 16th.  More information available HERE.
