6pm – Reception & Artifacts Preview
6:30pm – A conversation with Bobby Henry from the Westside Gazette, and Erin Purdy, Special Collections Archivist at BCL.
From Easter Lily Gates’ work registering minority voters in the 1930s to the national attention that our 21st century elections have garnered, the history of our Supervisor of Elections office and our local electorate have been deeply influenced by women’s work.
Join the BCL Special Collections department at Main Library for a historical discussion of the roles that women have played in enfranchising local voters at 6:30pm. Bobby Henry, publisher of the Westside Gazette, will be a featured speaker along with BCL Special Collections Archivist, Erin Purdy. A reception to preview artifacts and have refreshments will begin at 6:00pm.
Original artifacts from the Broward County Historical Archives will be on display including Broward County’s first ballot box (1916), Easter Lily Gates’ quirky election day hats, and one of the “hanging chad” voting machines from the contested Bush v. Gore 2000 Presidential Election.
