Papa Hemingway in Cuba, a 2015 film based on a true story about Ernest Hemingway and journalist Denne Bart Peticlerc, will be the Hibiscus Theatre’s featured movie on November 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ft. Lauderdale Woman’s Club, 20 South Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale.

Hemingway, played by Adrian Sparks, befriended Peticlerc, played by Giovanni Ribisi, in the 1950s when the journalist was working for the Miami Globe.

The film which was shot at Hemingway’s home, Finca Vigia was the first Hollywood film to be shot on the island since the 1959 revolution. Hemingway lived there from 1939 until 1960, and wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls and Old Man and the Sea in Cuba.

Hibiscus Theatre is an occasional film series highlighting movies made in Florida or featuring stories based in the Sunshine State.

A $5 donation at the door is requested. Free popcorn and cash bar will be available. Proceeds from the film will go to the Hacienda Ranch for Girls, a residential program for abused girls, as part of the GFWCFL President’s Project for the state of Florida.
