Fort Lauderdale, FL, October 13, 2016– FATVillage Projects, the 501c3 nonprofit that heads up FATVillage Art District’s popular last-Saturday Artwalk, is pleased to announce the openings of its upcoming shows: Nocturnes VI: The Lost and Found in The Projects and Incurvatus In Se, a solo show by Christopher Ian MacFarlane in FAR Contemporary.

Nocturnes VI: The Lost and Found in The Projects
Nocturnes VI: The Lost and Found is a presentation of installations by 17 contemporary artists whose materials and subject matter reflect on the idea of loss. Loss, here, is presented in many ways: as mystery, as regret, tragedy, or relief, and in many forms, including: things, ideas, people and places. The losses are represented both personally and broadly, and touch on issues discussing loss of identity, loss of place/history, loss of people and states of being. As well, the invited artists consider what is “found” (or understood, or revealed), though the visual expression of their losses.
The Nocturnes series is an annual theme, where each October, FATVillage curators Leah Brown and Peter Symons bring together a group exhibition of contemporary artists in themes touching on the supernatural. Previous themes have included “Hyperstition”, in which artists explored notions of reality of the intangible, “Monstrous Strange”, in which the artists created renditions of the monsters they struggle with, from the personal to the societal and political, and most recently, “The Second Life of Trees”, where the exhibition was imagined as artworks made from the wood of an enchanted forest that had been cut down, resulting in a new kind of forest of powerful and strange, wooden sculptural installations. Now in their sixth year presenting the Nocturnes series, Brown and Symons are returning to one of the enduring original inspirations of traditional autumnal mythologies: Ofrendas. Ofrendas are the Dia de los Muertos tradition of creating temporary altars to honor departed loved ones. For Nocturnes VI: The Lost and Found, the artworks do not resemble traditional Ofrendas, but rather push their concepts and media to include performance, video, site specificity and interactivity.

Leah Brown and Peter Symons are the Gallery Directors and co-curators of The FATVillage Projects and FAR Gallery. They were named the 2016 “Curators of the Year” by the Broward/Palm Beach New Times.
The Projects Contemporary Art Space is an 8000 sq ft warehouse/exhibition space located at 523 NW 1st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. It can also be accessed through FAR Gallery at 521 NW 1st Ave. 4-5 art exhibitions are exhibited in this space, annually.
Incurvatus In Se, a solo show by Christopher Ian MacFarlane in FAR Gallery
Incurvatus In Se, (latin for “curving in on itself”), is a solo show by Christopher Ian MacFarlane of new paintings and animations of his iconic figures. These works show influence of early 90’s animation as well as futurism and the works are often grotesque, poignant and humorous. Macfarlane is a self-taught visual artist with a prolific body of work in painting, sculpture, murals and animation. Macfarlane’s tongue and cheek drawings, painting, cardboard and animatronics sculptures are inspired by 90’s cartoons, his family, and overcoming boredom of everyday life. MacFarlane is a 2016 Broward New Times’ “Best Visual Artist”. See more of his work at www.hauntedmirrorforest.com.
FAR Gallery (formerly BOX Contemporary), is located at 521 NW 1st Ave, and is the entry gallery to the FATVillage Projects offices. 6-7 art exhibitions are exhibited in this space, annually.
FATVillage Projects is a 501c3 non-profit art center whose purpose is to promote the creation, exhibition, curation, research, and education of emerging, contemporary artists. Our focus is creating an equal opportunity community inclusive of all arts, including: visual art, media and the performing arts. FATVillage Projects is a 2014-2016 recipient of a John S. and James L. Knight Challenge Grant to expand programming. Gallery hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 1-5 pm.
