After a postponement in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Broward Public Library Foundation is reviving LitLIVE!, a free virtual event , on Friday, May 14, featuring conversation with authors Kaitlyn Greenidge and Kirstin Valdez Quade. Nila Do Simon, chair of the Library Foundation’s Board of Directors and a journalist whose work has appeared in Conde Nast Traveler, The New York Times, Garden & Gun Magazine, Marie Claire and other national titles, will moderate the discussion.
Greenidge’s book, Libertie, is an unforgettable story about one young Black girl’s attempt to find a place where she can be fully, and only, herself. She became well known with her first novel, We Love You, Charlie Freeman, which won a Whiting Award, was named a New York Times Critics’ Top Ten Book of 2016, and was a finalist for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. Her newest novel has already been chosen at the #1 April Indie Next Pick and a March LibraryReads Selection, as well as made numerous “Most-Anticipated Books” lists.
The Five Wounds, a novel by Quade, is a stunning debut that paints a picture of families in New Mexico with long and proud lineages struggling with poverty and a deadly drug epidemic. This book has been named one of the Most Anticipated Books of 2021 by Oprah Magazine, The Week, The Millions, and Electric Lit. She is also the author of Night at the Fiestas, winner of the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize and many other awards.
This virtual event, generously sponsored by Nova Southeastern University, will start at 6:00 pm and last one hour. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions that the authors will answer during the last 15 minutes. Guests are encouraged to bring a beverage and sit back and enjoy the event.
Registration is open to the public but is required. Visit bplfoundation.org/virtual-litlive-2021 to RSVP. Once registered, guests will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link to the event.
