The Association of Performing Arts of India (APAI) continues its 20th Anniversary celebration with three  special events on Saturday, August 25, 2018, taking place at the Savor Cinema and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

The celebration begins at Savor Cinema at 2:30 p.m. with a remarkable 1958 Indian film, The Music Room, directed by the award-winning director, Satyajit Ray. Roger Ebert gave it his highest rating and has said that this movie has one of the most evocative moody opening scenes ever filmed. A middle-aged man stares obliviously into space as his servant scurries toward him with a hookah, like the water pipe smoked by the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. The passion of his life is to hold expensive concerts in the music room of his crumbling palace, still showing it off, while his money runs out.  Much like King Lear, he arouses our sympathy even while indulging his vanity and stubbornly doing all of the wrong things. The Anniversary events continue at the Mary N. Porter Ballroom at the Broward Center with dinner beginning at 5 p.m. Guests will enjoy a fine dinner, featuring some savory Indian dishes, with breathtaking views of the New River serving as backdrop.

Following dinner is a traditional sitar concert at 6:30 p.m. inside the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center. The concert features Ustad Irshad Khan on surhahar and sitar, and Shankhachur Lahiri on tabla. They will play music from the Imdadkhani Gharana musical legacy.

Proceeds from all events will support the Association of Performing Arts of India Legacy Fund at Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.
