The Event opens at the NSU’s Museum of Art/Fort Lauderdale at 2pm with a Family Day/Dia de los Muertos with puppet shows, art workshops and more for the kids alongside cultural lectures and film for teens and adults.  New for this year, the community will gather at 6pm in Huizenga Park.  At 6:15, the costumed revelers will be led by Event Founder Jim Hammond from Puppet Network and his giant puppets as they follow the Riverwalk toward the America’s Backyard/Green Room entertainment complex.  Downtown will be teaming with a wide range of spectacles and activities for a diverse audience.  There will be Mexican Ofrenda altars for loved ones, indie crafts for sale in the Craft Crypt, live modern music on the Boneyard Bandstand and our newest venue… the Folklorico Stage where Mariachi and Dancers spotlight cultural performing art traditions. Craft projects and face painting will be available for children in Los Angelitos Kids Zone until 9:30pm.   Interspersed throughout there will be mariachi bands, skeleton painted ponies, art installations, mask making workshops, a hearse & low rider meet up, Latin American food trucks and interactive street performers by Circus Basura and Puppet Guild of South Florida. Every skeleton may also compete in costume contests with special prizes from our sponsors.

Fort Lauderdale Ranked as One of the Top 100 Best Places to Live

List Ranks America’s Best Places to Live, Work, and Play

Liv-Top-100-Badge-Green-WhiteThe City of Fort Lauderdale has been named one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live by Livability.com, a national website that ranks quality of life amenities of America’s small and mid-sized cities. Fort Lauderdale ranked number 24 on the list nationwide and number 3 in the state.

To produce its inaugural list of Top 100 Best Places to Live, Livability.com partnered with Richard Florida’s Martin Prosperity Institute, the world’s leading think tank on the role of location, place, and city-regions in global economic prosperity. Together, a study was conducted of more than 1,700 U.S. cities and the factors that make them the best places to live, work and play. Researchers narrowed their field to cities with populations between 20,000 and 350,000 before collecting data from a wide range of sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Walkscore and GreatSchools.com.

The data collected for the ranking was weighted based on an exclusive survey conducted for Livability by Ipsos Public Affairs, a leading global market research firm. Respondents were asked about factors that make their communities better places to live, as well as the factors they would consider in selecting another city. Those factors were narrowed down to eight categories – economics, housing, amenities, infrastructure, demographics, social and civic capital, education and healthcare – that were used to determine each city’s LivScore. Fort Lauderdale ranked high for amenities, education, healthcare and infrastructure.
