Having survived the camps, 42-year old Dr. Aládar “Aldó” returns to his ob-gyn practice in Budapest. His family perished in the camps, and he lives alone, with only his medical journals for company, until Klára, a 16-year-old force of nature, holding on to hope that her parents return, storms her way into his life. Also a survivor, she senses a kindred spirit in Aldó and soon, he is acting as a foster father. As they grow closer, the joy in both of their lives slowly returns, but as the Soviet Empire rises to power in Hungary, their pure relationship is put into question. This lyrical story about the power of love in the midst of conflict, loss and trauma is one of the few Holocaust films to center on the healing process of those who survived and remained with us.
