The Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club will show Adaptation, a 2002 film starring Nicholas Cage (playing twins) and Meryl Streep Friday October 5, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the clubhouse at 20 South Andrews Avenue. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for free popcorn and cash bar.
Adaptation is a comedy-drama based upon screenwriter Charlie Kaufman’s struggle to adapt the non-fiction Orchid Thief, a memoir about writer Susan Orlean’s search for a ghost orchid. These orchids are only found in the Fakahatchee Strand on Florida’s west coast.
Adaptation is also a biological term for changes in the structure of an organism to suit its environment.
Nicholas Cage plays Kaufman and his fictional twin brother Donald in the film. Spike Jonze directed Adaptation. Both Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper won Golden Globes for Best Supporting Actor(s).
Famous movie critic Roger Ebert (1942-2013) praised the movie for its “lighthearted darkness” and plot twists. It made his list of great movies and he later called it “the best movie of the decade”. Orleans, who initially resisted the theatrical plot changes that blur fact and fiction, eventually praised the film as true to the book’s themes of life and obsession.
Adaptation’s audience is intimately included in Kaufman’s struggle to write the screenplay. By watching the movie, the viewers also become part of the finished product. It is a sophisticated plot device that guarantees surprises.
Hibiscus Theatre is a quarterly event at the Woman’s Club, which features films with a Florida themed connection.
A $5 donation is requested. Tickets may be purchased through Eventbrite or at the door.
As a part of the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club’s annual Holiday Drives guests are encouraged to either bring small toiletries to support a longstanding service commitment to Seafarers’ House for Christmas Gift Boxes or canned goods to support the club’s Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Broward Pantry.
Parking is available at either the clubhouse or at County Lot 2.
