order-by-disorder-concert-imageRimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden Suite opens this energetic and passionate program. An indefatigable reviser and arranger, he regarded it as “…my best work, not only that but perhaps, on the whole, the best of all contemporary operas.”

Internationally acclaimed pianist Svetlana Smolina once again joins the Symphony from her world tour to perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2. As quoted in the Los Angeles Times, “Smolina’s defining of the lyrical aspects in the music she played made her performance cherishable…”

Nielsen’s 5th Symphony is considered his best work in this form. The music itself clearly defines a drama of energy and release, obsession and insistence. This is the first time the SFSO has performed a Nielsen Symphony.
