For three decades, The Commodores have remained a force in the music industry. In 1968, the group was formed while all of the members were in college at Tuskegee University. After being discovered by Berry Gordy, the group went on to sell over 60 million records for Motown.

The group’s most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was co-lead singer. The band’s biggest hits included ballads such as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Nightshift,” as well as funky dance hits like “Brick House,” “Fancy Dancer,” “Lady (You Bring Me Up),” and “Too Hot Ta Trot.” It was in 1986 when the Commodores won their first Grammy for the song “Nightshift.”

The current members of the group are William King, Walter “Clyde” Orange and J.D. Nicholas, who are typically joined on stage by their five-piece band known as the “Mean Machine.”
