Riverwalk Trust Selects GMStrategic Media
As Publisher for Go Riverwalk Magazine

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Riverwalk Trust today announced plans to grow the scope and reach of its established Go Riverwalk magazine, with Fort Lauderdale-based GMStrategic Media as the magazine’s new publisher.

“As the city magazine of Fort Lauderdale, Go Riverwalk is a tremendous asset for the Trust and for the community,” said Tom Vogel, chairman of the Riverwalk Trust. “Since its launch seven years ago, our magazine has been central in building a sense of community in and around the downtown. Working with GMStrategic Media, we look to position the publication for a dynamic future.”

Through its agreement with GMStrategic Media, magazine owner the Riverwalk Trust will continue to produce Go Riverwalk’s editorial content. In line with the Trust’s mission -- to be the catalyst in building and nurturing Riverwalk as a vibrant community connected by the New River – the magazine showcases the organization’s initiatives, from the just-introduced weekly Urban Market along the Riverwalk and the Tree Harmony replanting program, to the Light Up Lauderdale annual promenade of holiday lights and the GClub, which raises funds to improve Riverwalk Park.

The publication also keeps readers current on the local arts, entertainment, business, lifestyle and community scene. Vogel said that going forward, the Trust will expand and upgrade Go Riverwalk’s editorial product, producing 10 issues a year.

“The Riverwalk Trust’s events, like this spring’s hugely popular Burger Battle, are unusual in bringing businesspeople together to relax and have fun while expanding their networks,” said Mark Budwig, the Trust’s incoming chairman. “We see a ‘business lifestyle’ evolving in the city, and will increase our coverage of Fort Lauderdale business trends in the magazine.”

Founded and led by veteran custom publisher George Mihaiu, GMStrategic will be responsible for Go Riverwalk advertising, design, printing and circulation, beginning with the September 2010 issue.

“Partnering with George and his team will help us engage more people from throughout Broward in all that Downtown and the city have to offer,” said Riverwalk Trust President/CEO Cindi Hutchinson. “George brings a strong custom publishing track record to help us realize Go Riverwalk’s considerable potential. He’s also active in civic affairs and has a terrific feel for the Trust’s mission.”

Mihaiu’s company currently publishes news magazines and e-newsletters for several of the city’s neighborhood associations. Earlier in his career, he co-founded a custom publishing company serving the American Association of Port Authorities and other clients nationwide. After selling that company, he formed GMStrategic Media in 2007.

DOWNTOWN WEATHER  RIVERWALK ROUNDUP MAY 2010
Riverwalk Trust Works to Create a More Sustainable Riverwalk Park
By Cindi Hutchinson

Just as one drop of water is the beginning to fill a cup - a pond - or an ocean, one person’s efforts to take care of the world starts to make the world a better place. For the past several months, members of the Riverwalk Trust board and community members have created a 26-page document called Riverwalk 2020: A Sustainability Framework to guide the Trust, the City of Fort Lauderdale and the private and public sectors to manage the Park in a sustainable way for the next decade.

Go Riverwalk asked Alena Alberani, Chair of the Riverwalk Trust Sustainability Task Force, to share some of the committee’s thoughts about the report.

What is the Riverwalk 2020: A Sustainability Framework?
Riverwalk 2020 organizes sustainability guidelines for the social, environmental and economic improvement of Riverwalk Park over the next decade. Sustainability in this context is not just about the environment, but about community and economy as well.

What are some of the main goals?
The main purpose of the document is to promote four primary sustainability “goals,” formulated as part of the overall sustainability framework:

  1. Community goal
Riverwalk Park as the City's "living room:" To expand Riverwalk Park's cultural, recreational and social offerings to boost its social value and public profile and make the Park the center of activity in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
  2. Economic goal
A dynamic, enduring local economy: To build opportunities for the Trust and the City to partner with the public and private sectors in expanding local economic activity in and along the Park and the New River.
  3. Environmental goal
Clean air, clean water and low carbon footprint: To develop a healthy interface between the built elements of the Park and the natural elements of the urban forest and the New River and do so in a way that consumes fewer resources, less energy and less pollution.
  4. Bonus goal
Happy, healthy, active people: To transform the Park into an urban amenity operated under sustainable practices so that the physical and emotional well-being of Park users improves.
